What is the difference between waterbased, solvent, latex, and UV printable large format papers?

For any inkjet printing job, a form of solvent is needed to carry the pigment onto the paper. If you opt for waterbased ink, this solvent is predominantly made from water and is compatible with aqueous inkjet print media paper. Waterbased inks are often seen as the more sustainable choice as they don't contain toxic chemicals. This also means there is less chance of exposure to hazardous fumes than you might have with solvent-based inks. Waterbased printable paper is ideal for interior advertising and point of sale graphics. Latex, on the other hand, is encapsulated in a water carrier. In UV printing, the ink isn't absorbed, but instead dried by UV lamps.

Solvent based inks are compatible with solvent, latex & UV inkjet papers. The solvent is usually made from a mix of oils and has a very high print quality. It is also water and high temperature resistant, making it perfect for outdoor use. Flexible and versatile, it works well on a range of different surfaces, including plastic and cardboard. Both waterbased and solvent based inks have their unique pros and cons so you can decide which best suits your needs.

What is the best large format paper for photo reproduction?

When printing large format media for applications such as posters, you’ll want to be sure that you use good quality paper to assure high-resolution and durability. Inkjet photo papers are available in a variety of different finishes, weights and sizes, so you can choose media solutions according to your project requirements. Uncoated and coated paper is perfect for displaying vivid colours and sharp definition, ensuring your poster looks as professional as possible. As well as being compatible with waterbased inks, these inkjet photo papers are FSC certified, making them a great eco-friendly option.

What is the best large format paper for use with printers?

If you are using a digital printer such as a laser printer, you use toner rather than ink cartridges. Unlike solvent based ink, toner is a solid substance which is then fused onto the paper. There are a range of different dry toner papers so it’s important to find the one which best matches your purpose. For example, performance paper is more lightweight so perfect for plans, maps or presentations. Production paper, however, is more heavyweight and works well for posters or point of sale signage.
